To update a map, go to Offline maps as explained above, select the map to be updated, and tap the Update button. The Google Maps app will show the date an offline map will expire. If a map has expired, users will need to download it again. For example, only driving directions are available in offline mode, so users won't get transit, cycling, and walking directions. There is also no traffic info and alternate routes as these features require the internet. Downloaded maps can expire and have to be updated before they do. Not all features are available with offline maps. Select Offline maps in the menu and choose a downloaded map to use. To access downloaded maps, open the Maps app and tap the profile icon at the top right corner of the screen. Users can download multiple offline maps for different areas. After choosing the area to be downloaded, tap the Download button at the bottom of the screen. The larger the area of the map to be downloaded, the more space it will require on the device. The size of the map will be displayed at the bottom of the screen. It’s a neat feature that I hope Google brings back (and improves) for tablet users like myself.Users can pinch to zoom out to cover more areas not shown in the box. This will allow you to fully zoom in anywhere within the confines of what was visible at the time of creating the cache. Once it’s cached you can use the map at any time, even in Airplane mode. Google will take a moment to “pre-load” the area and then save the copy to your device’s offline cache. Once you have the area you’d like to cache in view, type “okay maps” into the search box.

It does let you cache a moderately large-sized area though so it should be enough for short trips around your town or county. Unfortunately, Google Maps won’t let you cache a map of an entire state, the file size is just too big. To use it open the Maps application on your Android device and then select the area you would like to cache. While version 6 of Maps had a direct option for creating an offline cache, the method now used is more of an Easter Egg than an official feature, but it works none the less. If you’re using a modern version of Android these steps will vary. Note: This article was originally written while using Android 4.1 Jellybean.
